Freshly harvested ginger has so much more flavor. It also doesn't have that "harsh" ginger flavor that comes from ginger that has been sitting in the the grocery store for a long time. Ginger is propagated thru rhizomes. I sprout rhizomes in "plant plug" sizes. ***Please note that sometimes I have to trim the leaves to fit in the shipping box which does not harm the plant- they will grow back quickly***. I like to plant ginger in grow bags to control their spread. They spread under ground thru their rhizomes. Plus it is easy to dump the grow bags at harvest time. You can start harvesting pieces of rhizome as needed in about 6 to 9 months.

Ginger is a tropical plant. It is perennial in garden zones +9, or where the ground doesn't freeze. If the ground freezes, it will kill the rhizome. Plant them in containers if your ground freezes and bring in doors once temperatures drop below 50F. Ginger plants go dormant during the winter and the top vegetative growth will die back. It will start sprouting new growth when spring arrives. Plants can get as tall as 4-5FT. If you bring it in doors, it is ok to cut the stems down if you have to. They thrive in wet soils and shady spots.

How to Plant
I recommend that you plant the plug in a 1 gallon container so you can monitor its growth. It is the closest thing to a traditional "cherry" that I can grow here in my Florida garden. It is native to the Caribbean so it grows and produces great in tropical and sub-tropical areas. It produces fruit almost all year round, making it very productive. The plants are self fertile, so you only need one. But if you have two growing next to each other, they will cross pollinate which increases yields. My trees start to bloom around April/May once warmer weather arrives. Fruits are ready to harvest in about 3 weeks from bloom. The fruit is soft, juicy, and has a thin skin. The flavor is delicious, reminding me of fruit punch drinks. The Barbados cherry doesn't have a hard pit inside. Instead, it contains 2-3 seeds that are easy to spit out. These little cherries are packed with Vitamin C and eating just 2-3 cherries provides more than the daily requirement.

Barbados cherry is a fast growing tropical fruit tree that will mature at around 12FT tall (if planted in ground and not pruned). It kind of looks like a young bushy oak tree. However, the tree can be pruned down to a lower height or maintained as a shrub. It actually makes a great option as a landscaping hedge or shrub line since its ornamental but provides something edible. If needed, the Barbados cherry can be grown in containers (try to grow in the biggest container that you can find).

How long will it take to start fruiting? Approximately 2-3 years if grown in ideal conditions. This is a well rooted starter plant that will grow quickly. Its actually part of the mint family and is native to parts of Asia, Africa, and India. This semi-tropical herb thrives in hot climates when many other herbs cannot. The broad leaves have a soft fuzzy sensation with a strong mint/oregano/lemon type of flavor. Its high medicinal and is used to make tea, dried as a seasoning, or added to marinades for various meats. Like other members of the mint family, this is a vigorous plant that spreads when its stems touch the soil and get rooted. However, the stems are much thicker making it easier to gram and pull them out if needed. In extreme heat, like my Florida garden, it grows much better in partial shade to shield it from the afternoon sun. It also has a completely edible core - meaning the core is not so hard and fibrous like other varieties. Lastly, leaves are thronless, which is very helpful when it comes to weeding around plants or applying fertilizer in the pineapple patch. Zones 9 and up can safely plant pineapples outdoors.

Perennial food crop: Pineapples are perennial plants that will survive for many years in warmer climates. The skin is light green and has a spongy feeling to them. They can get longer than 1 foot. Luffa aka Loofah aka dish rag gourd, is a tropical plant and thrives during the hot and rainy summers of Florida and the Southern United States. It is sensitive to cold weather and frost can kill the entire vine. The vines are vigorous, grow quickly, and get very big. Some gardeners like to grow it up a large tree for support. I grow mine on metal trellises because each luffa gets heavy. This is so much fun to grow. The bees and pollinators love the bright yellow flowers. I like to hand pollinate each flower to ensure they will produce a luffa gourd. It is easier to peel the luffa's to get the sponges inside just before it is completely dried out and brown, still at the end of the green stage. I recommend you watch some YouTube videos to see how it is done (video on my YouTube channel coming soon). This does require a long warm growing season to be able to harvest luffa gourds at the right stage for making into sponges, at least 90-120 days.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Germination: 14-21 days

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/2” deep

Sowing: Please note, luffa seeds can be hard to germinate. Here are my recommendations for the best germination.
1. Soak seeds for 24 hours. It helps to knick a corner of the seed shell to allow more water into the seed with a nail clipper.

2. It needs warm soil temperatures. Can direct sow once outside temperatures are consistently in the 70F's or above. Or start seeds in doors 4 weeks before your last frost date. In warmer climates (zones +9) can also direct sow or start seeds in June/July to get another harvest before winter comes.

3. If your going to start seeds indoors, sow in solo cups or larger pots because they grow quickly.

4. I highly recommend the use of a heat mat to speed up germination. I start seeds in solo cups, place them inside a plastic tote/storage box with a heat mat at the bottom, then seal the top with plastic wrap. This will trap heat and humidity which will help increase germination. Once they germinate, remove the plastic top and place under grow lights. I like to plant ginger in grow bags to control their spread. They spread under ground thru their rhizomes. Plus it is easy to dump the grow bags at harvest time. It will start sprouting new growth when spring arrives. Plants can get as tall as 4-5FT. If you bring it in doors, it is ok to cut the stems down if you have to. It is considered a substitute for cilantro if your unable to grow it, or if regular cilantro tastes like soap to you. Plants get very bushy, lush, and green even when growing in full sun. They go to seed after several months of growing, therefore doesn't require constant succession sowing like cilantro. Papalo is native to South America and is called "papaloquelite" which comes from the Aztec word for butterfly, "papalotl." Leaves do not dry or cook well so use this as a fresh garnish or topping over food. I start seeds in solo cups, place them inside a plastic tote/storage box with a heat mat at the bottom, then seal the top with plastic wrap. This will trap heat and humidity which will help increase germination. Once they germinate, remove the plastic top and place under grow lights. Common names include moringa, drumstick tree, and horseradish tree. Leaves are typically used to make a caffeine-free tea. The leaves can also be dried and blended into powder form so it can be added into smoothies. The leaves are considered a super food, as it is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and high in plant based protein. It also contains all eight essential amino acids. Moringa contains 7x the Vitamin C found in oranges, 4x the calcium of milk, 4x the Vitamin A of carrots, 3x the potassium of bananas and essential trace minerals such as iron and zinc. Does best in zones 9 and warmer as it is a tropical plant. It is very fast growing and the leaves/branches are used for "chop and drop" garden practices and composting. The leaves can be soaked for a few days in water and then blended to make an all natural fertilizer. Can also be used to feed chickens.

Check out my how to harvest moringa YouTube video tutorial that shows techniques for drying the leaves, turning the leaves into a fine powder, and two recipes for all natural moringa garden fertilizer:
https://youtu.be/oiDPnLGB1eA

Follow me on social media because I talk a lot about the same seed varieties I sell here in my shop and gardening tips. Cuban Oregano is neither an oregano or Cuban. This plant produces thick and crunchy pods that are best harvested at 6 inches long or below. Despite its spiky appearance, its texture is just like a crisp raw green bean. The flavor reminds me of a cross between green beans and cucumbers. This humble bean packs a protein punch just like the popular soybean. Every bit of the plant is loaded with protein - even the flowers hit up to 15%! Winged beans thrive in hot and rainy environments. Winged beans are triggered to start flowering once the day light hours start to decrease in fall. Therefore, direct sow beans in summer (June) so the plants are a nice big size by the time fall arrives. You will start harvesting in fall and winter. Because of this, I recommend growing winged beans in warm winter climates (no snow or hard freezes), to ensure you will get a harvest, like zones 9-12. Grow them just as you would pole or vining beans. Vines can get around 12-15FT long. It is sensitive to cold and is therefore treated more like a long lived annual. Vines are extremely vigorous, often reaching over 20FT in one growing season. Plus, it has a very high disease and pest resistance. After two years of growing this black bean, I have had no issues with pests or disease. In fact, the second year crop reseeded on its own. I did not water them or anything and it still produced loads of very long cowpea style pods that have numerous black beans inside. I just love it when edible things reseed in my garden and require zero effort! Puerto Rican black beans is a perennial plant in areas that barely get any cold. Otherwise, treat it as a long lived annual crop that will die once the cold arrives, but not before providing several flushes of harvestable beans. This vegetable is really meant to be grown as a drying or shelling bean. This is by far the best shelling for the purpose of drying black bean cultivar I have ever grown. It is a must for those looking to add edible plants to their permaculture or food forest type setups. It is important to note that Puerto Rican black beans are day light sensitive, meaning they are triggered to start flowering and producing beans once the day light hours start to shorten in fall. So it it best to direct sow seeds in early summer so they are nice big plants by fall time. Also, I cannot stress how big these vines get. The last picture shows how the vines climbed up one of my orange trees and totally took over. Give it a nice large trellis and it will reward you with a ton of black beans.

PLANTING
Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures are 70-85ºF

Seed Sowing Depth: 1” deep

Sowing: Direct sowing is preferred in early summer.

Harvest: Wait until the pods have dried out and turned brown before harvesting. Wait for them to turn completely red if you want to dry/smoke them for chipotle peppers.

Peppers are slow to germinate and slow to start growing to transplant size. I recommend to start seeds in pots/trays with a heat mat to speed up germination. Then start fertilizing weekly with half strength fertilizer once the first set of true leaves appear. Peppers are similar to tomatoes in that they like plenty of water and are heavy feeders.

Peppers are perennial plants and can produce for several years if taken care of. In cold climates trim off all the leaves and bring in doors in a pot to over winter. Place back out doors once temperatures are nice and warm. In mild climates, pepper plants can be left out doors and might need to be covered on the coldest nights.

Follow me on social media because I talk a lot about the same seed varieties I sell here in my shop and gardening tips. It yields bunches of medium-sized, richly flavored bananas that are perfect for fresh consumption, desserts, or baking.

What sets the Dwarf Cavendish apart is its adaptability to container growing, making it suitable for those with limited space or a desire to introduce a tropical atmosphere to patios, balconies, or indoor settings. Despite its modest stature, the plant's broad and lush green leaves contribute to an ornamental and exotic aesthetic. Additionally, the Dwarf Cavendish is relatively easy to care for, requiring consistent moisture, regular fertilization, and ample sunlight. Fruits are harvested young, when they are still light green with white streaks to be used as a zucchini substitute (see first picture). They are diced and cooked into soups or stuffed and baked. Since this is native to South America, it has a very high disease and pest resistance compared to the common zucchini cultivars grown in the United States. Plants are vigorous and sprawl out 15FT in all directions. It doesn't seem to catch powdery mildew as bad as all the other squash type things that I grow. Plants produce fruits that can be variable in shape and color. Some are light green while others are more dark green. Some are nice and round, while others are more oblong in shape (see second picture). If allowed to mature on the vine all the way until the skin turns a light tan color, the inside flesh is an orange color like butternut squash (see last picture).
