Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) is a tropical plant in the pepper family, closely related to black pepper and the betel plant, and traditionally grown across the South Pacific islands. For generations, its roots have been used to make a cold-pressed ceremonial drink known as kava or grog, often shared in wooden bowls during social gatherings and cultural ceremonies. The prepared root is known for creating a numbing sensation in the mouth, and different cultivars vary widely in strength based on their kavalactone content (the naturally occurring active compounds in kava).

This listing is for a live starter-sized plant of the ‘Isa’ cultivar, which is often described as one of the more easily-grown kava types and is also known for being quite strong compared to other varieties. In some regions, stronger cultivars like Isa are traditionally used more selectively, and it’s important to note that kava grown outside its native environment or harvested young may not develop the same potency. Kava thrives in warm, humid conditions with bright filtered light, rich soil, and consistent moisture, and it must be protected from cold temperatures and frost.

Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 10-13
Does not like cold temperatures. Ideal temperature is above 60F with high humidity. Grow in a large pot if your located in a colder climate and bring indoors for the winter once temperatures drop below 60F.
Perennial plant - but will lose leaves if exposed to too much cold
Sun: Partial shade
Soil: Grows best in soil with lots of organic matter
Water: Monitor young plants and keep consistent water
Fertilizer: Not really necessary for mature plants, but for young/smaller plants I recommend adding a general all purpose fertilizer, like Espoma Garden Tone, to give the plant a boost.

Shipping Information

Orders are shipped in 1-3 business days excluding holidays or delays due to natural disasters like hurricanes.

Seeds are shipped in bubble mailers so they will not be pushed through USPS roller machines which can damage the seeds. I will not ship seeds in an envelope for this reason.

Seeds will be shipped with no planting instructions to keep seed costs low to the buyer. Germination and plant care information is included in the description. I encourage each gardener to research specifics on how to be successful growing them. I also have lots of information on my TikTok, Instagram and YouTube channel all under the account name jerrasgarden. I started this shop to share my love of certain seed varieties and spread the knowledge of gardening. Please contact me if you can't find information or have additional questions.

Orders with live plants are packed on Mondays and Thursdays (excluding holidays or delays because of natural disasters. Plants are shipped in boxes with packaging material to protect them while they are in transit.

Refunds & Exchanges

No returns or refunds once shipped. I am not responsible for lost or damaged packages caused by USPS. Since there are so many factors that affect germination and growing success, no refunds or exchanges are allowed once seeds have shipped. These are the same seeds I use in my personal garden so I can attest to their viability. Seeds are fresh season to season.
