‘Little Psycho’ Wild Coffee (Psychotria nervosa) is a unique dwarf selection of Florida’s native Wild Coffee shrub, prized for its compact growth habit, glossy deep-green leaves with beautifully textured veins, clusters of small white flowers, and ornamental bright-red berries. Unlike the standard Wild Coffee, which can develop into a much larger shrub, ‘Little Psycho’ typically stays only about 2–3 feet tall with a low, spreading habit, making it especially useful beneath fruit trees, along shady borders, and in smaller native landscapes and food forests. Although it belongs to the same Rubiaceae plant family as true coffee (Coffea), Wild Coffee does not produce drinking coffee and its berries do not contain caffeine; instead, the colorful fruits are valuable food for birds and the flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Native to Florida, Wild Coffee naturally grows as an understory plant and performs especially well in part shade or filtered light, making ‘Little Psycho’ an excellent choice for filling the often difficult-to-plant lower layer beneath larger trees. While it is not an edible crop for people, it makes a wonderful addition to an edible landscape, permaculture garden, or food forest as a native support species, adding evergreen foliage, wildlife habitat, pollinator resources, biodiversity, and an attractive living ground-layer around your productive plants.
Ideal Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9–11; best suited to warm subtropical and tropical climates. In colder areas, it can be grown in a container and protected during winter.
Cold Protection: Protect young plants from frost and freezing temperatures. Established Wild Coffee can tolerate brief periods of light frost, but prolonged freezes may cause significant damage or dieback.
Height at Maturity: ‘Little Psycho’ is a naturally compact selection, typically growing about 2–3 FT tall with a low, spreading growth habit.
Sun: Partial shade to shade is ideal. This Florida native naturally grows as an understory plant beneath trees and performs well in filtered light. Avoid harsh, all-day sun, especially in hot climates.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. It naturally performs well in the rich, leaf-littered soils found beneath trees and benefits from a layer of organic mulch.
Water: Keep soil consistently moist while the plant becomes established, but avoid constantly waterlogged conditions. Once established, Wild Coffee has moderate drought tolerance, although it looks and grows best with regular moisture.
Fertilizer: Generally a low-maintenance Florida native and does not require heavy fertilization. Compost or a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season is usually sufficient. Avoid excessive fertilizer, particularly in native landscape settings.
