Louisiana Long Green is a beloved Southern heirloom eggplant with deep roots in American home gardens — a variety prized for its striking appearance, mild flavor, and exceptional performance in hot, humid climates where it truly thrives. Unlike the deep purple globe eggplants most commonly found in grocery stores, this variety produces long, slender fruits with pale green to creamy white skin that can reach 8–12 inches in length, making it both a standout in the garden and a conversation starter at the farmers market. The flesh is tender, mild, and notably low in bitterness, with fewer seeds than many other varieties — qualities that make it a joy to cook with and a great introduction to eggplant for those who don't usually love the vegetable. Plants are vigorous and productive, reaching 24–36 inches tall and performing best in full sun, rich well-drained soil, and warm temperatures. Louisiana Long Green shines in Southern cooking traditions — sliced and pan-fried, battered and deep-fried, stuffed and baked, grilled alongside summer vegetables, or simmered into a rich Cajun stew. An open-pollinated, heat-loving heirloom that rewards Southern gardeners and anyone looking for something truly different from the garden, Louisiana Long Green is a variety that earns its place in the seed collection year after year.
For best results, start your seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last spring frost date, maintaining soil temperatures around 75–85°F to encourage optimal germination. Once the seedlings are hardened off, transplant them into full sun, spacing plants 2–3 feet apart. Provide rich, well-draining soil and consistent moisture, while avoiding waterlogging. Pick clusters when the fruits are light green and approximately the size of large peas—frequent harvesting stimulates continual fruit production.
Ideal Growing Conditions
Sun: Full Sun
Water: Allow the soil to dry out a little bit in-between watering
Fertilizer: Add fertilizer into the planting hole at transplant time. Also fertilize once a month with an organic granular fertilizer, like Espoma Garden-Tone to boost growth and production.
When & How To Sow Seeds: I highly recommend you sow seeds indoors so you can control the growing environment better. Sow 3 seeds per 4 inch pot, filled with sterile seed starting mix. Fertilize with a liquid fertilizer once the first set of true leaves appear. It will take 2-3 months for it to reach transplant size. Plant outside after all danger of frost has passed.
Germination: 10-15 days
Days To Maturity: 75 days from transplanting into the garden.
How & When To Harvest: Harvest them when they are 8 inches or smaller for the best texture and flavor
Common Diseases: Eggplant can get some powdery mildew, spots, or blight in very wet conditions. Improve airflow by spacing plants 8FT apart - this particular variety grows very tall so ideally plant them with more space in-between plants. Prune out old, dead, yellowing, or heavily diseased leaves. Spray with 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water to clean and disinfect.
Common Pests: The most common pests when growing eggplant are aphids and spider mites. Knock aphids off your plants with a strong blast of water from your water hose. Spray with spinosad for severe aphid infestations and if you have spider mites.
