Purple Vienna Kohlrabi Heirloom Vegetable Seeds
Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes
Listing is for 1 packet of approximately 100 seeds

This is so much fun to grow. Harvest bulbs when they are 3 inches wide or about the side of a tennis ball. The bulbs have a purple skin but the interior is white. It has a similar flavor to cabbage and a similar crunchy texture to turnips. The leaves are edible like kale. I like to peel the skin and thinly shred to eat raw with dip or add on top of a salad.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Sun: Full sun. In hot climates, plant in a spot that gets full morning sun with afternoon shade.

Water: Keep the soil consistently moist

Fertilizer: Mix some all purpose organic granular fertilizer into the soil before direct sowing the seeds. Fertilize again every 4 weeks.

When & How To Sow Seeds: Kohlrabi is best grown from direct sowing the seeds so as to not disturb its root system. Direct sow seeds when you start planting your fall garden and continue direct sowing more seeds through winter. Cover with frost protection if temperatures fall below 25F. Direct sow 4 per square foot by covering with 1/4 inch of soil.

Germination: 5-15 days

Days To Maturity: 75 days after direct sowing the seeds

How & When To Harvest: Kohlrabi is ready to harvest when the swollen stem, or “bulb,” reaches about 2–3 inches in diameter—usually around 50–60 days after sowing, depending on the variety. If left too long, the bulbs can become woody and tough, so it’s best to pick them while they’re still young and tender. To harvest, simply cut the stem at the soil line with a knife or gently twist and pull the bulb out. Both the bulb and the leaves are edible—the bulbs are crisp and mild, while the leaves can be cooked like kale or collards.

Common Diseases: The most common disease when growing kohlrabi is clubroot, which causes swollen roots, wilting, and stunted growth. To manage it, rotate crops, raise soil pH with lime, remove infected plants and keep the garden clean to prevent its spread.

Common Pests: One of the most common pests when growing kohlrabi is the cabbage worm, which is green with white stripes down its back. Classic signs of a worm infestation include munched on leaves and finding little green, black, or orange balls which is the frass (poop) of these worms. You can hand pick them off your plants, but if the infestation is severe, spray with an organic worm treatment like Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).

Shipping Information

Orders are shipped in 1-3 business days excluding holidays or delays due to natural disasters like hurricanes.

Seeds are shipped in bubble mailers so they will not be pushed through USPS roller machines which can damage the seeds. I will not ship seeds in an envelope for this reason.

Seeds will be shipped with no planting instructions to keep seed costs low to the buyer. Germination and plant care information is included in the description. I encourage each gardener to research specifics on how to be successful growing them. I also have lots of information on my TikTok, Instagram and YouTube channel all under the account name jerrasgarden. I started this shop to share my love of certain seed varieties and spread the knowledge of gardening. Please contact me if you can't find information or have additional questions.

Orders with live plants are packed on Mondays and Thursdays (excluding holidays or delays because of natural disasters. Plants are shipped in boxes with packaging material to protect them while they are in transit.

Refunds & Exchanges

No returns or refunds once shipped. I am not responsible for lost or damaged packages caused by USPS. Since there are so many factors that affect germination and growing success, no refunds or exchanges are allowed once seeds have shipped. These are the same seeds I use in my personal garden so I can attest to their viability. Seeds are fresh season to season.
