Jamaican Strawberry Trees (also called Jamaican Cherry), are a fantastic addition to edible gardens, food forests, and permaculture setups due to their rapid growth and generous fruit production. This unique tree produces small, sweet, red fruits that have a cotton candy sugary sweet flavor, making it an exciting and lesser-known tropical fruit to grow. The tree is self-fertile, so you only need one to produce fruit. It is named Jamaican strawberry tree because of the white flowers that look similar to strawberry plant flowers. If you plant in the spring, it should start producing before the end of the year in warm winter tropical and subtropical climates. Otherwise, it will take at least 1 year to start producing, maybe even longer if it goes through a cold winter within 1 year after planting. Mature Jamaican strawberry trees get to a height of 25-40FT tall. You can heavily prune this tree to maintain a smaller size and it will still produce.

This is a tropical plant that dislikes cold temperatures. It’s important to protect young plants if temperatures fall below 50°F. Once mature, Jamaican Strawberry Trees can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but grows best in USDA zones 9B and above. In colder regions (zones 8 and below), this plant will need to be brought indoors during the winter to survive.

Ideal Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9B-11

Cold Protection: Protect young plants if temperatures drop below 50°F. Mature plants can endure brief periods of cold down to 32°F, though you may see leaf damage. Prolonged exposure to 30°F or lower can kill the plant.

Sun: Full sun is ideal for vigorous growth and abundant fruiting, but it can tolerate partial shade with reduced production.

Soil: While the Jamaican Strawberry Tree thrives in rich, compost-heavy soils, it can grow well in a variety of soils, including sandy, less amended soils like those found in Florida.

Water: Keep young plants well-watered and provide consistent moisture. Once established, they are fairly drought-tolerant.

Fertilizer: Mature trees usually don't need fertilizer, but young plants benefit from a granular fertilizer mixed into the planting hole for a good start.
