Awapuhi Red Shampoo Ginger aka Pinecone ginger Starter/Sprouted Plant
Zingiber zerumbet

Listing is for 1 starter/sprouted ginger plant grown in a 4 inch pot. The leaves/stems can be 5 inches or longer. If the plant has very long stems, I might have to cut them to fit into the shipping box. Please be aware that these are tough plants and cutting the leaves or if the stems get damaged while shipping - the plant is ok, it will bounce right back and grow new leaves/stems.

Shampoo ginger is native to Hawaii. The ginger relative produces gorgeous red pinecone red flowers. The ridges of the flowers fill with a clear and fragrant liquid which naturally has saponins in it. Therefore it is commonly used as a natural hair shampoo or moisturizing hair mask treatment. The liquid does have a slight ginger fragrance. The flower cones will refill with water if left on the plant after squeezing. It is propagated via rhizome pieces not seeds. I like to plant ginger in containers or grow bags to control their spread. They spread under ground thru their rhizomes.

When will my shampoo ginger plant start flowering? The rhizome system needs to get bigger and mature to be able to out put flowers. Please expect 1-2 years  for the first blooms (if grown in ideal conditions).

Shampoo Ginger goes dormant during the fall & winter. This tropical ginger goes dormant and loses its leaves during the winter. It will sprout new leaves in late spring. Then it flowers during the summer.

Soil: Shampoo ginger doesnt require the best soils, but grows very well if planted in compost. I also grow it in my native Florida sandy soil without any amendments and it grows great.

Sun: Shampoo ginger grows best in partial shade. If the leaves look yellow and burned, its getting too much sun.

Cold Hardiness: Grows in USDA garden zones 8 and up. In zone 8, it is a requirement to heavily mulch the plants to protect the rhizomes under the ground from freezing. If the rhizomes freese - then the whole plant will die. In garden zones 9 and up, it is fine to plant outside without additional precautions. If your in a colder zone plan on brining this plant indoors for the winter. You can cut all the stems/leaves out and just leave the rhizomes intact in the soil, but still need to bring indoors to protect from the cold.

How to Plant
I recommend that you pot up the plant in a 1 gallon container so you can monitor its growth. Use potting mix or compost. Once it has developed a bigger root system, you can plant it outside or change to a bigger sized pot. Shipping Information

Orders are shipped in 1-3 business days excluding holidays or delays due to natural disasters like hurricanes.

Seeds are shipped in bubble mailers so they will not be pushed through USPS roller machines which can damage the seeds. I will not ship seeds in an envelope for this reason.

Seeds will be shipped with no planting instructions to keep seed costs low to the buyer. Germination and plant care information is included in the description. I encourage each gardener to research specifics on how to be successful growing them. I also have lots of information on my TikTok, Instagram and YouTube channel all under the account name jerrasgarden. I started this shop to share my love of certain seed varieties and spread the knowledge of gardening. Please contact me if you can't find information or have additional questions.

Orders with live plants are packed on Mondays and Thursdays (excluding holidays or delays because of natural disasters. Plants are shipped in boxes with packaging material to protect them while they are in transit.

Refunds & Exchanges

No returns or refunds once shipped. I am not responsible for lost or damaged packages caused by USPS. Since there are so many factors that affect germination and growing success, no refunds or exchanges are allowed once seeds have shipped. These are the same seeds I use in my personal garden so I can attest to their viability. Seeds are fresh season to season.
