Awapuhi Red Shampoo Ginger aka Pinecone ginger Starter/Sprouted Plant
Zingiber zerumbet

Listing is for 1 starter/sprouted ginger plant grown in a 4 inch pot. The leaves/stems can be 5 inches or longer. If the plant has very long stems, I might have to cut them to fit into the shipping box. Please be aware that these are tough plants and cutting the leaves or shipping without the pot is ok, they will bounce right back.

Shampoo ginger is native to Hawaii. The ginger relative produces gorgeous red pinecone red flowers. The ridges of the flowers fill with a clear and fragrant liquid which naturally has saponins in it. Therefore it is commonly used as a natural hair shampoo or moisturizing hair mask treatment. The liquid does have a slight ginger fragrance. The flower cones will refill with water if left on the plant after squeezing. It is propagated via rhizomes. Ginger is propagated thru rhizomes. I sprout rhizomes in "plant plug" sizes. ***Please note that sometimes I have to trim the leaves to fit in the shipping box which does not harm the plant- they will grow back quickly***. I like to plant ginger in grow bags to control their spread. They spread under ground thru their rhizomes. The rhizome system needs to get bigger and mature to be able to out put flowers. Please expect 1 year for the first blooms (if grown in ideal conditions).

This tropical ginger goes dormant and loses its leaves during the winter. It thrives in wet soils and shady spots. In my zone 9B garden, it loses its leaves during winter and starts to put out new growth starting in summer. Leaves do get pretty tall when the plant is fully mature as seen in the last photo of me holding a stem.

Grows outdoors just fine in zones 9+. This is a tropical plant and easily killed by the cold. If your in a colder zone plan on brining this plant in doors for the winter. Can cut all the stems/leaves out and just leave the bulbs intact in the soil, but still need to bring in doors to protect from the cold.

How to Plant
I recommend that you plant the plug in a 1 gallon container so you can monitor its growth. Use potting mix or compost. Once it has developed a bigger root system, you can plant outside or pot up. Shipping

***I cannot ship this plant to Hawaii due to agricultural restrictions***
Please understand that I only offer USPS flat rate priority mail options for plants/bulbs/rhizomes. The longer they stay in transit, the greater the risk that it will arrive dead or damaged. I just want to ensure that plants arrive alive/healthy to my customers.

Shipping Information

Orders are shipped in 1-3 business days excluding holidays or delays due to natural disasters like hurricanes.

Seeds are shipped in bubble mailers so they will not be pushed through USPS roller machines which can damage the seeds. I will not ship seeds in an envelope for this reason.

Seeds will be shipped with no planting instructions to keep seed costs low to the buyer. Germination and plant care information is included in the description. I encourage each gardener to research specifics on how to be successful growing them. I also have lots of information on my TikTok, Instagram and YouTube channel all under the account name jerrasgarden. I started this shop to share my love of certain seed varieties and spread the knowledge of gardening. Please contact me if you can't find information or have additional questions.

Orders with live plants are packed on Mondays and Thursdays (excluding holidays or delays because of natural disasters. Plants are shipped in boxes with packaging material to protect them while they are in transit.

Refunds & Exchanges

No returns or refunds once shipped. I am not responsible for lost or damaged packages caused by USPS. Since there are so many factors that affect germination and growing success, no refunds or exchanges are allowed once seeds have shipped. These are the same seeds I use in my personal garden so I can attest to their viability. Seeds are fresh season to season.

Stalk was bent in half to fit in the box. I have it straightened and praying it'll make it since all the leaves are in the top half. It did arrive wrapped safely in moist soil, so i have high hopes for it. If i need to cut the stalk where it was bent, even though there's no leaves on it, please let me know. I know my other gingers die down to the ground every year, so it may not matter. I've never had a problem with any of Jerra's plants or seeds I've ordered, so this is probably fine also. 🤞
